An introduction to the molecular structure and reactivity of carbon-based compounds. Emphasis is given to the relationships between molecular structure and chemical and physical properties. Topics include theories of chemical bonding, isomerism and stereochemistry, IR and NMR spectroscopy, and the mechanisms of fundamental reactions (i.e., substitution, elimination, addition). 3 lecture hours and 1 recitation hour per week. Offered in the fall semester. Prerequisites: CHM 151/151L, 152/152L. Corequisite: CHM 203L.
