Although most people think of Europe in terms of "national" cultures, it is the local community, whether urban or rural, that teaches its members a way of acting in and seeing the world. This course considers some of the general cultural variations that characterize European communities and some possible explanations (historical, ecological) for that variation, and then proceeds to a series of community studies of a small number of cultures.
