This course explores the art of Japanese woodblock printing from its origins in early Buddhist texts to the present day. The focus is on the "Floating World" (Ukiyo-e) prints of the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, and includes an examination of their impact on nineteenth-century Western painting.
