Each year, this course addresses a major theme in the history of modern Russia. Students work with the latest scholarship in the field of Russian history and explore primary sources before writing a substantive research paper. The topic of the course in 2000 was Stalinism, but future topics may include: imperialism in tsarist Russia, the Soviet experience in World War II, or Tolstoy's Russia.
