This course will introduce students to maps, spatial data, and electronic tools for geographic analysis. Fundamental geographic and database concepts will include map types, spatial referencing systems, map projection systems, map scale, and database characteristics. Tools including ArcGIS Desktop software and Global Positioning System receivers will be used to acquire and analyze spatially referenced data sets drawn from diverse sources and disciplines relating to the environment. Students will use their new skills in geographic analysis to develop an electronic portfolio, including a questionbased map project. This course will prepare students for more advanced geographic analysis within the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, or engineering. Lecture-demonstrations. Prerequisites: none.
