Literacy Reading and Writing is designed to meet the needs of pre- and non-literate students who lack basic literacy skills even in their first language. The general goals of the course are that students gain the basic skills of recognizing reading and writing the alphabet and numerals; learning basic phonics; building vocabulary; and starting to read and write commonly used words and simple sentences. Course goals are chosen from the mandated Level 1 Washington State Core Competencies for reading and writing. The state competencies are expanded upon in order to clarify student needs and curriculum goals for this course.
