A comprehensive study of organic compounds stressing electronic valence theory. Nuclear magnetic resonance, the synthesis and reactions of alcohols and ethers, nucleophilic substitution and addition at the carbonyl group, electrophilic aromatic substitution, the synthesis and reactions of amines, the chemistry of free radicals and pericyclic reactions. Laboratory work includes extraction chromatography and distillation of organic compounds, preparation and characterization of typical compounds by chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Four hours credit each semester. Three class hours; three laboratory hours. Prerequisite: CHM 209.
