Begins the systematic study of Japanese. Includes basic grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and conversation practice, and introduction of Hiragana and Kanji writing systems. Practice with lab materials required. PREREQUISITE: No previous background in Japanese, or no more than one year of high school Japanese, or no more than two years of high school Japanese with a "C" average or less. Satisfies a humanities/fine arts/English requirement for AA degree. Formerly JAPAN 101.
