This course is designed to explore methodically African American cultures and artistic manifestations and to promote increased awareness, understanding, degrees of tolerance, and perhaps, aesthetic appreciation of African American heritage. Pre-European African influences to modern cultural values of African American societies will be examined. Contemplative objects representing both visual and performing arts will be studied in their historical context. The student will be introduced to Internet resources as they pertain to appropriate thematic materials. This course partially satisfies the writing requirement of S.B.E. 6A-10.030. Prerequisite: ENC 1101.
