This course covers the legal foundations of historic preservation in the United States, beginning with federal law and moving through state, municipal, and agency regulation. Special topics covered include laws protecting archaeological sites, cemeteries, and historic buildings, as well as new efforts requiring consultation with Native American and Native Hawaiian groups. Students work closely with members of the Newport Historic District Commission to gain an understanding of the importance of zoning as a tool in local preservation. 3 credits.
