A study of the Latin American short story from its origins to the early twenty-first century. It considers how these stories represent ethico-political views, violence, paranoia, mass culture, gender, race and sexuality; and adapt and take part in important literary movements and modalities such as the testimony, adventure, magical realism, detective fiction, science fiction, and historical fiction. The course also offers students the opportunity to pursue work in the art of writing short stories. Taught in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 250
