The development of slavery law and homicide law, and relationship between legal and religious institutions will be examined in Sumerian, Babylonian, Biblical, Greek, and Roman civilizations. Readings will include the Laws of Hammurabi, Reforms of Uruiningina, the Codes of Ur-Nammu and Lipit-Ishtar, "Exodus," Code of Gortyn, Aristotle's "Politics," selections from trial speeches of Demonsthenes and Cicero, and from Justinian's "Digest."
