This course examines the ways music has been affected by technolgoy from the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. How has recording technology changed the way we listen to, create, and experience music How does electronic and computer music relate to the rest of music Is a recording the record of an event or a whole new art form in itself Do machines encourage a kind of music-making radically different from previous live music Now that nearly every recording is done digitally, does that make all recorded music computer music This course has both a theoretical and a practical component: in addition to the history of technology's transformation of music, the course examines the basics of digital sampling, recording, sequencing, and mastering software.
