Video is increasingly computer-based. It is being recorded on digital tape, processed and edited on non-linear post-production systems using software and peripherals to create quicktime films and video art. In this course, students will learn computer imaging software including Fusion, Premiere, and After Effects to create short art projects based on formal structure of the medium. Students will be introduced to the historical, philosophical, and technical contexts for new technological art forms. Students will read a range of material including articles about art, artists, technology, and philosophy. They will see and discuss examples of videotapes and CD-ROMs by leading digital artists. Students will write several essays and maintain a production notebook. In addition to assigned exercises, students will propose and create a final project using digital imaging instruments.
