Science is rarely presented as a part of history, or in an historical context. It is often portrayed as something rigid and inflexible. We think of science as a product of the minds of very special people, the scientists, who think about the world in ways divorced from the social and historical context of the time in which they live and work. Science is often blamed for their controversial discoveries (and their bi-products) which are misused by society, such as nuclear energy, smart bombs, chemical wastes, and virulent microorganisms. Conversely they are praised by those discoveries such as bionic hearts, life-saving medicines, monoclonal antibodies, and gigabyte cyber systems.
