Prerequisite: POLSC 120; or consent of instructorUsing case studies from both developed and less developed politicalsystems, this course examines the different ways that political systemsattempt to manage conflict in societies divided among ethnic,racial, religious, and linguistic subcultures. The course addressesthe global persistence and reemergence of ethnic and nationalidentities, movements for "self-determination," separatism, regionalautonomy, and the rise of religious fundamentalism. The origins anddevelopment of communal conflicts in Northern Ireland, Lebanon,India, Malaysia, Nigeria, and South Africa will be studied in historicaland comparative perspective.
