Japan has had one of the world's strongest and most creative cinema traditions, dating back to the invention of motion pictures. It has produced some of the greatest directors, actors, and themes in cinema history, and its influence in contemporary culture outside of Japan, especially through its anime off-shoots, are now standard fare world-wide. This course examines what Japanese cinema can teach us about the making of contemporary Japan.
