Prerequisite: FRE 211 or permission of instructor This course is a survey of Francophone literature and culture from the Negritude movement to the present. Themes such as tradition versus modernity, the sacred and the profane, hybridity and the cosmetics of nationality, and identity are analyzed. A postcolonial reading of poems, novels, and films by French speaking African writers and filmmakers will help gain an understanding of thematic expressions of Francophone Africa.
