This course concentrates on the history of contemporary Italian cinema from Neorealism to the present. Students will view and analyze influential films and study the work of eminent filmmakers who contributed to the development of the Italian cinematic tradition. This course will present an in-depth overview of the development of social, political, and cultural aspects of Italian society through the post-World War II era, the economic boom of the sixties, the social turmoil of the seventies, the building of a post-industrial society in the eighties, and the issue of migration in the nineties. Readings will incorporate scholarly articles on the films and authors studied.
