This course explores some of the significant life experiences of women in sub-Saharan Africa (such as marriage, sex and sexuality, motherhood, being a wife, families, aging, widowhood, work, and urban vs. rural life), how the same type of experiences are lived by African American women, and how an understanding of culture and social organization helps us understand how African and African American women sometimes experience these similarly and sometimes differently.
