4 credits (Required for Art and Design Major - Cat.III) This comprehensive survey course traces the development of the visual arts from their prehistoric origins to the threshold of the modern age. The course examines the social, economic, religious, philosophical, and political contexts from which artists and art movements evolved; how cultures influenced them, and how artists influenced societies. Field trips to galleries and museums, as well as the use of slides and other visual examples, will additionally synthesize the student's perceptions of the historical significance of art through the ages.
