Description:

This course is primarily concerned with the visual art of India: how to look at it and how it might be best understood. The larger cultural context in which this art was produced, drawing upon history, religion, mythology, and literature will be discussed. Essentially, per-modern Indian art is religious art. After studying the major monuments associated with Buddhism, Hindu art, the themes common to both traditions will be considered. The temple as an artistic expression and as a religious center will be explored. Because of the vastness of India art, this course will not include Mughal and later monuments. Prerequisite: Art 242.
