This course will examine how writers and artists in the United States defined and took great interest in distinctive American regions during the period roughly from the end of the Civil War through the 1920s. The course will focus on American regional fiction, placing that fiction in a broader historical context and considering it alongside photographs, prints, and paintings. Along the way, we will read recent critical analyses of American literary regionalism, in order to understand how scholars have treated the authors and subjects taken up in the course. Among the authors we will read are Bret Harte, Maurice Thompson, Sarah Orne Jewett, Thomas Nelson Page, Charles Chestnutt, Sherwood Anderson, and Willa Cather.
