Spring 2008 topic: BIOL 390 PLANT DIVERSITY: ALL THINGS GREEN AND WONDERFUL. From the humblest unicellular alga to the mighty angiosperms that rule the world, the major players in the evolutionary history of plants will be the objects of our inquiries. What were some of the "obstacles" plants had to overcome to transition from aquatic to terrestrial habitats, and how were those obstacles overcome Why aren't mushrooms, seaweed, or lichens considered plants Do plants occur in the fossil record Why are there so many variations on the theme of alternation of generations, and can any trends be detected in these variations Why are there so many species of angiosperms now These are some of the questions we will explore through a combination of lectures, readings, discussions, and lab investigations.
