Pioneers in spatial acoustics and early recording technology sought to electronically reproduce the three-dimensional sound field. Today, thanks to innovative audio work in film and interactive media, this reproduction is being done with multi-channel surround sound. The wide adoption of home theaters and video gaming systems has moved surround sound technology from the Cineplex to the living room.
