How does the screen writer adapt a work of fiction for film What are the concerns of the novelist as opposed to those of the filmmakers (director, writer, actors, etc) What are the characteristic strengths and tools of one medium as compared with the other How do we "read" a novel, "read" a film. Is it fair to condemn a film for "failing" to present a novel accurately What works in a book and not on the screen This course will seek answers to these questions by examining a series of novels and their screen adaptations representing world cultures and various eras. We will explore the fundamental qualities of the literary imagination and those of the cinematic imagination. The course will require extensive reading and considerable time spent viewing films outside of class.
