A survey of the early civilizations of the Near East from the origin of urbanism at the end of the 4th millennium BCE to the fall of the Sasanian empire in the 7th century CE. During the course of the semester we will examine archaeological evidence, the written record, the glyptic of cylinder and stamp seals, and the evidence derived from sculpture and material culture to reconstruct the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia, Anatolia, and Iran. The course will focus on historical narrative with special concentration placed on religion, ritual, and myth.
