BIOL 1100, 1200 and 2110 with a minimum grade of C or better. CHEM 2110 and CHEM 2120. Open only to juniors and seniors. The study of genetics at the molecular level. Topics include the structure and function of nucleic acids, mechanisms of transcription and translation, control of gene expression, DNA sequence analysis. Focus is on readings from classic and recent research literature in molecular genetics. The accompanying laboratory is designed to give students hands-on experience in the basic techniques of recombinant DNA technology: plasmid isolation, transformation of bacterial cells, restriction mapping, and analysis of cloned genes.
