Familiarity with Latin, Greek or Myth. Not open to freshmen. (Cross-listed LITT 3202.) Reading the Roman poet Ovid's epic poem on classical mythology, The Metamorphose, the standard text on the subject for subsequent generations, and the novel of Apuleius, The Metamorphosis (or The Golden Ass), plus later poems and stories with similar themes or characters. We will also trace the influence of Ovid on the painters of subsequent centuries. Students will report on literature of corporal and non-corporal change that they have found and enjoyed. Faculty: F.
