This course will provide an in-depth examination of the protections afforded public education by the federal constitution, state (primarily New Jersey) constitutions, and major federal and state antidiscrimination laws. Specific topics will include key historical and contemporary educational reform issues, including school desegregation, affirmative action, funding equity, freedom of speech (including the student press and internet speech), freedom from the establishment of religion at school, the privacy right of students to be free from searches, due process in discipline and punishment, and the right of students to be free of harassment based on race, gender, and sexual orientation. Students will study the issues primarily through judicial decisions. This course has a W2 designation. Faculty: L.
