A history of popular culture and mass media in the world. From the beginnings in the Protestant Reformation, the Gutenberg Bible, and Renaissance painting, popular culture and mass media are now global phenomena. In the United States, the idea of democracy has been intimately tied in with the culture of the people and the conflicts between various groups and visions of what it means to be American. As the United States grew into a global power, these questions expanded globally, hand-in-hand with American cultural and corporate power. Prerequisite: HIST 101
