This courses traces the social history of Russia through its literature and associated art, from the primary chronicles of Kievan Rus through the "golden age" of late-ImperialRussia, the revolutions of 1917, and the Soviet period up to the post-Soviet present. Concentrating mainly on the modern era, it explores the complicated relationship between the Russian/Soviet State and its various subjects as expressed in excerpted novels, short stories, plays, poems, essays and/or memoirs (in translation) along with graphic-art, operatic, and cinematic adaptations.
