The course develops an appreciation for dis-tinctively eighteenth century forms that in-clude the ?heroic couplet,? ?mock-heroic,? and satire. The course also considers the nov-el and its ?rise,? the development of theories of the sublime and the picturesque, and the discipline of aesthetics. The course includes coverage of Pope, Fielding, Swift, Johnsand Gray, as well as a significant focus on the rise of a ?woman's tradition? exemplified in the work of Finch, Montagu, and their succes-sors.
