This course offers a survey of the literature of Cuba from the colonial period to the present. Emphasis is placed on the romantic poets Heredia and Avellaneda, the prose and poetry of Jose Marti, Afro-Cuban poetry, and the novelists of the "Boom"period: Carpentier, Cabrera-Infante and Severo Sarduy. Prerequisite: LANG 308 Survey of Spanish American Literature, or departmental approval
