An introduction to fundamental data communications concepts and terminology. Topics include modes of data transmission; transmission media; various hardware devices required to implement a data communications system; illustration of different types of networks; techniques to minimize the costs of operating the networks; and common data communications errors, their detection, and correction. Software concepts, common carriers, and industry standards are presented. Students are introduced to networking standards such as local area networks and wide area networks. Prerequisite: IS 105.
