With a population of some 1.3 billion, China's open-door policy, begun in the late 1970s, has produced significant and far-reaching changes in its society and economy. This course focuses on contemporary transformations of the world's largest Communist country: changes in social values and structure; lifestyle; people's attitudes; foreign investments; special economic zones; economic transactions; and the emergence of private enterprises.
