This course reviews the causes of the Civil War, selected battles and the resulting reaffirmation and extension of America's political principles in order to illuminate the nation's potential for difference, conflict and political resolution. Topics include states rights vs. union, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, the Emancipation Proclamation, and 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. 3 credits.
