Prereq: C- OR BETTER BIOS 330. An introduction to the use of biological assemblages to detect and diagnose the impact of human activity on natural ecosystems. Key topics include biotic integrity, reference condition, sampling methods, characteristics of good indicator species/metrics, stressor diagnosis, and working with inherent geographical and temporal variability in biological systems. Students will gain an appreciation of how biological understanding is incorporated into legislative and policy actions. Emphasis on aquatic systems but some terrestrial applications will be presented. Laboratory and final project involve handson bioassessments in local streams. 2 lec, 4 lab. May be retaken one time excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
