The role of art as object by dealing with issues of connoisseurship relative to the functions of the art museum - collecting, researching, conserving and exhibiting artifacts. How the quality of an object is determined, how the selection of objects controls our impression of an artistic epoch and how museum collections have been shaped by these kinds of judgments. Art restoration and its effect on the integrity of objects also will be discussed. 3 credits
