The theory and application of occupationalTherapy principles and techniques in the treatment of individuals with psychosocial dysfunction are presented in lectures and laboratory sessions. Students will have opportunities to examine their own perceptions of mental illness, to learn about the history of the treatment of the mentally ill, and the diagnostic characteristics of psychological and behavioral disorders frequently seen in occupational therapy. Group dynamics, frames of references, and community and social services available for individuals with a mental illness will be covered. emphasis will be on the occupational therapy Assistant's role in assessment, treatment planning, treatment interventions and documentation. interpersonal skills, group leadership and interviewing skills are practiced through role-playing and community-based experiences.
