This course introduces students to the history, biology, ecology, diversity, and evolution of ecosystems of the NewWorld tropics. Emphasis will be on rainforest, riverine, savanna, estuarine, and coral reef communities. Topics include: nutrient and energy cycling; light gaps, vertical strata and forest structure; animal-plant interactions, such as pollination biology, seed predation, dispersal and herbivory; plant and animal defenses; social insects; and latitudinal trends in biodiversity.
