Institution:
Ulster County Community College
Subject:
Description:
0 Credits Undeclared division Non Credit Courses First-person writing is more popular than ever. Memoirs and "creative nonfiction" are growing - and controversial - areas of publishing. Personal essay columns in many newspapers and magazines accept pieces from previously unpublished writers, allowing those with no prior experience in journalism or writing to break in, writing about their own experiences and perspectives. The class will focus not only on writing techniques for assorted types of first-person pieces and strategies for getting your essays published, it will also examine the controversy surrounding the veracity of "memoir" that has faced writers like Margaret Selzter, James Frey, Misha Defonseca, Augusten Burroughs, Frank McCourt, David Sedaris and many others. There will be discussion about the differences between "memoir" and "creative nonfiction," the conflicting emotions that accompany writing about people you know, and different ways to deal with that.
