Nurses are often called upon to work with train new staff and/or students. While they may be strong clinicians, these nurses may feel less comfortable in helping new staff develop skills they need to be successful in the work environment. This course will provide skills and strategies that address the most common concerns voiced by preceptors in dealing with this role. Topics include: * Setting clear expectations (assessment and evaluation) * The coaching role (giving feedback, constructive criticism and encouraging challenges) * Role expectations and factors affecting them (such as culture, intergenerational and gender issues) * Professional relationships (with other nurses, aides and health care providers) * Speical problems (including balancing teaching with clinical responsibilities, conflict management, giving up control and sharing your thinking)
