3 credits Prerequisite: ENC 1101 or IDS 1101H or ENC 1121H. This course is designed to provide an understanding of effective interpersonal communication behaviors and skills. The course is concerned with verbal and nonverbal elements affecting communication between individuals in family, peer group and work contexts. Students examine concepts and theories relevant to initiating, developing, modifying, maintaining, and terminating relationships with emphasis on the role of communication in the process. Lecture, discussion, in- and out-of-class observations, and "applied" assignments will be used to increase student knowledge and behavioral competence in interpersonal communication. 47 contact hours.
