3 credits Prerequisite: Successful completion of PHI 1600, PHI 1602H, PHI 1631, PHI 2635, or PHI 2649 or permission of program director. This course is a practical overview of key concepts and issues involving the ethics of death and dying and end of life decisions. Special emphases are placed on the historical development of ethical and critical thinking about claims, arguments, choices, and multicultural aspects of death and dying, and the application of ethical approaches to a wide range of end of life issues. Moral and legal ramifications of end of life decisions are examined. In this seminar-format course, students are provided an active learning experience, increased student interaction and opportunities for independent research into death and dying issues as these relate on a personal and, if applicable, a professional level. Credit will not be given for PHI 2550 in place of any of the following courses: PHI 1600, PHI 1603, PHI 1602H, PHI 1631, PHI 2621, PHI 2622, PHI 2635 or PHI 2649. 47 contact hours.
