3 credits Prerequisites: Admission to the Health Information Management A.S. degree program or the Medical Coder program and (CTS 1101 or Computer/Information Literacy Competency requirement), HSC 1531, and either BSC 1083 or (BSC 2085/2085L and BSC 2086/2086L). This course is an introduction to the health information (medical record) department, the role of the health information technician as a member of the health care team and the health information professional organization. Content to be addressed includes the fundamentals of health information practice, content and format of various types of medical records, numbering and filing systems, and health care data sets. 47 contact hours.
