O This course reviews the role of the coding professional, the history of classification systems with emphasis on the basic rules and guidelines of the International Classification of Diseases-Ninth Revision-Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). This course will review the purpose and use the structure and conventions of ICD-9-CM. Detailed study will cover coding procedures in assigning ICD-9-CM codes for diagnosis and procedures with emphasis on coding in the inpatient care setting. Prerequisites: HIM2472 or HSC2531, and HIM2453or BSC2084. Students should have completed or are concurrently enrolled in HIM1433 and HIM1442. Course must be passed with a grade of C or better.
