This course is designed to introduce students to the principles and practice of Surgical Technology. Topics include: hospital organization & physical environment of the operating room; ethical, moral and legal issues; patient care & safety; asepsis & sterile technique; surgical pharmacology & anesthesia; preparation, care and handling of instrumentation, equipment and supplies used in the operating room; closure of the surgical wound, wound healing and classifications and the development of a surgical conscience. Through a combination of theory and laboratory practice, students will be introduced to the basics of preoperative, intra-operative and postoperative surgical case management. During this course, students will have an opportunity for hospital observation in addition to laboratory practice. Co-requisites: SUR 102, ALH 149 (or equivalent transfer); and PNU 111 (or equivalent). 9 credits.
