A critical analysis of the American system of corrections. Covers important historical developments and the range of treatment and/or punishment options available to government, including prisons, jails, reformatories, and community treatment programs. Probation and parole are considered as an integral part of corrections. Current correctional philosophy and treatment approaches on federal, state, and local levels of government are assessed. The interrelated nature of all aspects of corrections is emphasized, with particular focus on policy analysis and decision-making. 3 credits
