Description:
This course prepares the student to provide advanced medical care to ill or injured individuals. The topics include roles and responsibilities, medical and legal concerns, ethics, introduction to pharmacology principles, basic and advanced airway patient assessment, electrocardiograph monitoring, as well as management of patients with traumatic, cardiac, respiratory, neurological, anaphylaxis, toxicological, or obstetric emergencies. This course, along with EMS 150 and EMS 175, prepares and qualifies the student to sit for the New York State EMT-Critical Care or National Registry EMT-Intermediate (99) certification examinations, providing all other certification requirements are met. Prerequisites: EMS 150 or equivalent and NYS EMT-Basic Certification or equivalent. Pre- or Co-requisite: Current infection control, hazardous materials and incident command system training, conforming to the requirements of the Paramedic Program Handbook. (Per Departmental Standards Version of EMS 170, approved by Academic Affairs on 4/14/05).
